PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - Cambodia's genocide tribunal rejected the appeal
of a former Khmer Rouge prison chief for release on bail, saying Monday that
he might try to flee or threaten witnesses. Defense lawyers for Kaing Guek
Eav, also known as Duch, demanded last month that he be released because his
human rights had been violated by the more than eight years he has already
been in jail without trial. He has been charged with crimes against
humanity. Chief Judge Prak Kimsan announced the court's dismissal of the
appeal after an hour of deliberations, echoing the prosecution's argument
that he might try to flee and could pose a threat to witnesses.
